14 months

Abby turned 14 months yesterday.

14 months seems like an odd age. It's between the other milestone ages. But, nevertheless, here's a hodgepodge list of Abby at 14 months old.

Within the last few days, she's started trying to walk a lot more than she ever has before. And she does it on her own - without us encouraging her. She can now turn around and change direction while she walks. She's still really wobbly - but it is no longer unusual to see her walk six feet (or more) without falling, whereas before, she was only walking half that distance. I have no doubt that she will soon be turning into a walker and not a crawler...but for now, crawling is still the most efficient way for her to get around. I think we'll be shopping for some "big kid" shoes soon.

She's also improved her fine motor skills. She can now stack blocks to make a tower. She has some large lego-type blocks that she can stack so that they snap together. She really enjoys that kind of thing. And, as most kids her age are, she's very interested in putting things into other things. Stacking cups and blocks, or putting toys in a box, or covering things with a bowl. It's all about discovering what fits where. One of her favorite past times is trying to fit all different things into our unused phone jack. So far, only the game control remote wires will fit very well, but she tries everything - from blocks to blueberries.

Another thing that has developed more is her sense of pretend. This excites me. Today, she held up an empty wi-mote box to her ear and started talking like she was on the phone. She has some long skinny blocks that she likes, and she'll pretend that they're spoons and scoop pretend food out of various bowls or holes in her toys - the best part about that is when she "eats" her pretend food, she always says "MMMMM!" very enthusiastically. So, I guess pretend food is tasty.

She's still into playing with Tilly and a few other dolls/animals. Mostly, she feeds them things all day. If she gets her hands on her Motrin syringe, then she'll go around and share and pretend to give her dolls and animals some medicine too. It's kinda scary how much she loves that thing - even without the medicine.

At 14 months, Abby is very good at helping us dress her. She will grab whatever article of clothing needs to go on next and give it to you. She sticks her feet up when its time for socks and shoes and has been a pro and putting her arms through her shirt sleeves for while now.

Tonight, after her bath, I decided to take a risk and let Abby crawl from the bathroom to her room sans diaper. She was funny, and seemed to enjoy bear-crawling around naked for a while. And then she peed on the carpet. I mean, of course she did. The funny part, was that she immediately crawled over to her changing table and grabbed a diaper and held up to Kyle expectantly.

Food is about the same. Some days she eats more than me and Kyle combined, and other days, she barely eats a whole meal. The only thing that is consistent is that she can't seem to get enough milk. We're still keeping a close eye on how much she consumes, but boy does she love milk. She likes to use the spoon by herself more and more, so we're trying to let her do that.

Health wise, she's ok. She's been sick this last month and seems to be afflicted with one of those never-ending colds. Currently, she has a constantly runny nose and has developed a bit of a cough. Otherwise, she seems to be in excellent spirits most of the time.

Let's see, what else? Oh, yeah, vocab. She still has her basic words that she uses pretty consistently. She's started saying "Beckah" when she sees her, which is probably her newest word. Oh, and if you ask her what a monkey says, she'll say "ooh-ooh, aah-aah" which makes me laugh every time. I should get a video.

So, that's Abby in a nutshell this month. I'm sure there's a lot I'm forgetting, but that's ok - I'll update again sometime.

Have a good weekend.
